How to Choose The Right Residency For You

So, you’re thinking about doing a residency? How do you even choose between them all? How do you decide if it’s really right for you?

Did you know that there are over 400 artist residencies in the United States and about 1,000 around the world? Yeah… that’s a lot to take on. But, well worth your time if you find the right fit.

First, you need to do some thinking, some self-reflecting. Ask yourself these questions:

1. What is my artistic vision? Does a residency fit into that vision?

2. What do I want to get out of my residency, and what kind of environment will support those goals?

3. What is my budget/what can I afford?

4. Will I be able to adjust quickly to a new environment so that I can be productive while I’m there?

Answer these questions before you embark on the residency search, and that will definitely help you choose the one that will nurture your creativity.

Every artist residency is different; many are institutionalized, many are located in big cities, and for some, the draw is isolation. But none are located in the Land of Enchantment, except Starry Night Retreat. The mountainous deserts of New Mexico encapsulate a small town called Truth or Consequences, how much more epic can you get? Just the name of the town almost made me drop my pencil and go there immediately!

If your answer to the third question worries you a bit, do not fear. Starry Night Retreat is super affordable; in fact, our prices bring in just enough money to keep us up and running. In a nutshell- we are not looking to make money off of you. A two week residency is only $650, and a month is $1200. You can stay anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months! This includes everything you may need except your own special art supplies and food.
