“Ma! I want to go to that Art Fair!”
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” yes, that’s true, and so is inspiration. Some people can pick up a pencil and glance at a blank sheet of paper, and the emptiness of the paper does it for them. Some, on the other hand, find the recipe to theirs by going to galleries- and most exciting of all, art fairs.
Rumor has it that the upcoming Art Basel Hong Kong is going to be more “bad ass” than the one this multi-cultural city hosted last year. To live up to it’s diverse hype, Hong Kong Art Basel will be a host to paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations, photographs, video and editioned works by over 2,100 artists within and around Asia!
Last year, Andy Warhol’s gratified car wasn’t the only eye-catcher that made an appearance, but many rising artists found their names on inspired lips. One thing that casts as appealing about Art Basel Hong Kong, is that the variety of art genres they present represent the personality of the city quite well. Their collection along with their presentation keeps a seekers mind involved. Someone who may have walked into the Fair day dreaming would walk out awake, and vise versa. If by fortune, your steps happen to be in this busy city, definitely make time to fill your pockets with inspiration! Oh, right- when is it, you may wonder? Art Basel Hong Kong will last through May 15-18, 2014. Mark it up!
As we fly through the major cities, lets land into New York City. Taking place on Randall’s Island in Manhattan, Frieze New York will be presenting art forms similar to that of the fair in Hong Kong, only with a different pool of artists and representatives. The fish in New York’s pool lean more toward modern, abstract and contemporary art. As a non-profit foundation the Frieze foundations have come a long way, not only with their exhibitions, but also with their handpicked projects. Make sure to check it out this year if you get the chance! Dates May 9-12, 2014! Get on it with all your senses!
Also, guess who’s Exposure Program is being held during Frieze Week this year? You got it, The Starry Night Exposure program is partnered with the Select Fair and will be hosting an exhibition in the Chelsea District of Manhattan May 8-12. We are still accepting applications for participants, so feel free to sign up to submit some of your own works. But don’t wait too long because the application deadline is March 15th!
Then there is this other city, Paris. Whoever wrote the definition of creative must have been somewhere in this breathtaking city, sipping wine. Not that the city’s art scene isn’t already always on the go, here’s a fair that everyone’s been keenly anticipating. Apart from an accumulation of talented works (from mixed media to photography to installations to paintings of various mediums) the fair will be showcasing works of 90 Chinese modern & contemporary artists under the title of “China Guest of Honor” to celebrate their 50-years of relationship.
What makes this Fair an absolute catch is the minor events it has going on while the big picture stays intact. Including the “China Guest of Honor,” Art Paris will be covering the ArtDesign Prize, the exhibition of the finalists of the Canson Prize for Art and Paper, a series of book signings and conferences, the VIP program of visits. All of this creates a gold mine for anyone digging for the slightest bit of inspiration. Mark your calendars for March 27-30, 2014.
