From One Artist to Another: Start Spring Strong
Let’s make March a great month! After all, I need something to get me through this treacherous winter (any Midwest or east coast person will know what I’m talking about).
Great news for artists. For anymore who missed our previous deadline for Exposure, do not fret. We have extended the deadline to MARCH 15th! Remember, we do not require an application fee like so many other organizations, so you have nothing to lose by applying, but possibly a lot to gain.
Every artist needs a boost at some point. If your life is busy (who’s isnt?) and you’re having difficulty dedicating large enough chunks of time to really create what you envision, then a residency in the southwest could be just the thing for you.
Imagine a small town in the Southwest, away from the usual hustle and bustle of your day-to-day routine. Each day, what you do with your work is dictated by what you decide to do. Work all day, or relax all day, it’s up to you. Scenic mountains surround you, and at night the sky is full of brilliant stars. After you’ve spent days focused and practicing self-reflection, you visit one of the local historic hot springs to recharge and start all over again.
“I left after a month with a body of work totally unplanned and so strong I was even a little startled. Somehow I just don’t think I would’ve arrived there if not for warmth and simplicity of Truth or Consequences, and the space itself; a little haven of turquoise and white.”
-Angela Deane, former artist in residence
The Starry Night Residency may be just the thing you need to get some quiet, self-directed time to finish up the work you’ve been pushing back all year.
Starry Night Retreat is open to any kind of visual artist, writers and even filmmakers. The living quarter includes a studio, furnished with a bed, chest of drawers, table, chairs, closet, bathroom and kitchen. There is a shared indoor work studio, and a shared outdoor work space. Studio spaces have plenty of floor space, work tables and there’s even Wi-Fi throughout the grounds.
Partners and creative partners are also welcome to stay with you for a additional weekly fee, so you won’t have to leave someone behind to enjoy your residency. Monika Proffitt, the director of Starry Night Programs, believes that artists shouldn’t have to “check their personal life at the door” while creating beautiful and inspiring work.
The application deadline for this quarter is April 15th.
So artists, start Spring strong and give some love to your projects;
