FAQs::Starry Night Residency
Based in the seams of the city of Truth or Consequences in New Mexico, Starry Night Residency proves to be an ideal niche for its resident artists and their ideas. However each of these artists followed a set of guidelines to secure a place for themselves. They did this by knowing whatever there was to know about our Starry Night Residency. Here are some of the questions that they asked, that will help you portray a clearer picture!
First step to the application,
Is there an application fee for the residency?
No. We do not charge an application fee, but we ask that only serious artists apply. A lot of consideration goes into reviewing applications, so please consider all of the details involved in participating before applying to any of our programs.
Great, but…
Is there a cost associated with the residency?
Yes. Our residency fees are as follows:
$650 for 2 weeks
$1200 per month*Payment plans are available
If you’d like to plan your finances,
Is there any financial aid available?
Based on merit and documented need, there is limited financial aid available for artists. If you plan on applying for financial support, please be prepared to submit copies of your most recent tax return statement, a recent pay stub, and an easy to read list of your monthly income and expenses.
Moreover, one of the benefits of this program,
Can I bring my partner, my creative partner, or spouse?
Yes. For an additional $175 per week, you can bring your partner or spouse. As you are sharing all living quarters and studio space, this applies to creative partners as well.
Living & finances aside,
Are meals included?
The cost of a residency at Starry Night includes private living quarters and shared studio space. Artists must provide their own meals.
That only means more options for your appetite right?
What are the Starry Night grounds like?
The grounds at Starry Night consist of four apartments encompassed within our intimate courtyard. Starry Night is nestled in an eclectic neighborhood in the downtown historic hot springs district. We enjoy views of the mountains in daylight and the expansive starry sky at night. Once you enter through the gate, you step into our comfortable, relaxing courtyard and outdoor dining area. Behind the apartments is our workspace barn and around the corner is the soaking tub. As a young residency we are constantly improving and growing our grounds.
As mentioned earlier, it’s an ideal niche!
An escape is one way, the other way would be connectivity to the rest of the world-
Do you have Wi-Fi?
There is Wi-Fi available on the Starry Night grounds, with the best hotspot being in the courtyard. There is Wi-Fi available in most units; although, the walls are thick and made of cinder block, so sometimes the signal doesn’t make it inside everywhere.
Housing, check! Food, check! Connectivity, check! Now, commuting-
What sort of transportation is available?
The two closest airports are in El Paso, TX, and Albuquerque, NM. They are each approximately a 2-and-a-half hour drive from Truth or Consequences. If you fly into the area, you must either rent your own car or take a bus from the airport to Truth or Consequences where one of our staff will pick you up at the town’s local bus stop.
Many artists find that they are able to rent a car from the airport for the duration of their stay for a good price and are very happy they did. This allows for more mobility and the ability to visit some really amazing places surrounding Truth or Consequences (see Area Attractions in the About section of the website). However, if you plan on staying around town, we have a small fleet of bicycles and most shops and restaurants are just a pleasant walk away. We do have one dedicated automobile for Starry Night staff to use. Use of this may be arranged on a case-by-case basis for trips directly related to the creation of work (e.g. picking up large supplies or shipping) and is limited to the city limits of T or C. If you have concerns or special needs for transportation, please do not hesitate to contact us before arriving so we can work something out.
Remoteness from the busyness is one of the key factors that keeps our residency’s personality intact!
& Lastly,
In the summer, is there air conditioning?
Yes, in the studio we have an air conditioner. In the living quarters we have ceiling fans and AIRs have the option of having a window air conditioning unit installed in their living quarters for an additional $35 per week.
Nonetheless, if you’d like to tour our grounds before you commit, here’s a little peek.
